Sega, Inc. Partners with AOS to Solve Storage Needs

Sega is a multidiscipline engineering and technical services firm that provides a wide range of design, planning, procurement, construction, training, and field services. They are dedicated to the concept that each client has unique needs and strive to provide their clients with the maximum return on their investment in engineering services and develop long-term relationships with their clients based upon mutual trust and respect. Their ultimate goal is to help each of their clients succeed.

"Sega's environment had grown to the point where it needed a way to manage their enterprise data backup more effective and efficiently in order to meet the Service Level Agreement as set by our executives", says Dave Oldham, AOS Design Architect

Larry Peak, Network Administrator explained that Sega's dilemma was that "with spiraling storage needs and 4 individual backups taking forever to complete, we were running into performance and reliability issues on the network. Files that had to be recovered were sometimes on backup job that had failed..or took so long to complete they had to be cancelled. Our user based was losing faith in our ability to protect their data."

Obviously a solution was needed. AOS helped resolve this storage problem by implementing a Clarion AX150i SAN with about 2.4 TB worth of storage. "This, in conjunction with DiskXtender software from EMC, helped us move little used data to storage off the main fileserver," Larry said. To get offsite backup, AOS installed an ADIC Scalar 24 Tape library. Once the back up to disk task is accomplished, the same data is then backed up from the SAN to a tape. The tape is then run from the SAN backed up data instead of the live data, and "it is possible to run back up jobs at anytime without interfering with production work, " says Larry.

"The knowledge level of the techs at AOS is second to none. I've yet to meet one with less knowledge, and for the most part, they've all had far MORE knowledge than I do. this is exactly what I look for in a company such as AOS," Larry noted.

Sega has now reduced their backup time significantly. They no longer worry about failed backups or problems with the tape. Larry says, "thanks to the tape library, we have yet to miss a back up job. We have complete confidence in the tapes and they are transported nightly offsite, and the network administrator sleeps much easier."

Larry also added, :AOS is a solid company with reputable, knowledgeable people. I have them listed here in my office as an emergency contact if we have network issues that I am unavailable to handle."
